The recommendations on CPR (Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation) change every five years. On the 15th October 2015, the European Resuscitation Council, ILCOR and UK Resuscitation Council announced the new 2015 guidelines.
Guidelines 2015 highlights the critical importance of the interactions between the emergency medical dispatcher, the bystander who provides cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and the timely deployment of an automated external defibrillator (AED). An effective, co-ordinated community response that draws these elements together is key to improving survival from out-of-hospital cardiac arrest.
The compression to breath ratio remains the same at 30 compressions to 2 breaths for adults and the same for children and infants with 5 rescue breaths preceding the first set of compressions.
They also noted that compression depth for adults stays the same whilst for children and infants it remains at 1/3 of the chest up to 4 cm. It was also stated that good recoil should be ensured after each compression for adults and children.
The resuscitation Council also encourage rescue breaths to be done when possible.
